Santa Caterina del Sasso Hermitage
A wonder clinging to the rock, suspended between sky and water.
The Santa Caterina del Sasso Hermitage is one of the most striking and photographed places on Lake Maggiore, where nature and history seem to defy gravity together. Set on the Lombardy shore, directly across the lake from us, this ancient monastery dates back to the twelfth century and is one of the region’s most captivating landmarks.
According to tradition, it was founded by Alberto Besozzi, a wealthy local merchant who survived a violent shipwreck and withdrew here to pray and live as a hermit. Another remarkable episode dates to the eighteenth century, when huge boulders broke away from the cliff above the monastery. They became lodged in the structure without causing irreparable damage and remained suspended there until they were secured in the early twentieth century.
Today, wandering through its cloisters and waterside porticoes, pausing on balconies above the lake and admiring the ancient frescoes brings a deep sense of calm.
An extraordinary place, suspended in silence, where time seems to stand still.
